Here’s How Long You Have to Return Your Holiday Gifts from Amazon, Walmart, Target, Best Buy, and Macy’s.
You may have some unwanted or unnecessary gifts after the holidays. If you or someone you gave a gift to wants to return it, you should be aware of the return policies of the major retailers.
Here are the deadlines and rules for returning items to Amazon, Walmart, Target, Best Buy, and Macy’s. And if you want to save money on shipping, check out these tips for these retailers.
Amazon returns
Amazon usually gives you 30 days to return items, which may not be enough for holiday gifts. My advice? Inspect the item as soon as you get it and ensure it matches your expectations. If not, send it back right away.
If you hold on to the item for more than 30 days and the recipient doesn’t like it, they can still get up to 80% of the price back on an Amazon gift card. They can also swap the item for a different variation, if available.
Keep in mind that some Amazon sellers may have their return policies.
Walmart returns
Whether you shop at Walmart online or in-store, you usually have 90 days to return what you buy. But for items bought between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31, Walmart has a special policy that lets you return them until Jan. 31, 2024. This means you or your gift recipient can enjoy the holiday deals and still have enough time to change your mind.

Target returns
You have 90 days to return any item you buy at Target unless you pay with the RedCard, which gives you 120 days. Target brand items and registry items can be returned within a year.
Some items have a special holiday return policy. Here are the details:
Electronics and entertainment items (except Apple products) bought from Oct. 1 to Dec. 24 can be refunded within 30 days from Dec. 26, so the deadline is Jan. 24, 2024.
Apple products (except iPhones) bought from Oct. 1 to Dec. 24 can be refunded within 15 days from Dec. 26, so the deadline is Jan. 9, 2024.
Mobile phones bought in-store or online as a pickup order from Oct. 1 to Dec. 24 can be refunded within 14 days from Dec. 26, so the deadline is Jan. 8, 2024.
Best Buy returns
You can return any item you bought at Best Buy within 15 days, except for phones or tablets, which have a 14-day return window. My Best Buy Plus and My Best Buy Total members get 60 days to return any item, except for phones or tablets.
If you get a gift from Best Buy, you can return it in a store and get store credit for the amount it costs. If you mail it back, the person who gave you the gift will get the credit.
Best Buy might have a special return policy for the holidays. If it’s the same as last year, you can return anything you bought from Oct. 24 to Dec. 31 by Jan. 14.
Macy’s returns
You can return anything you buy at Macy’s in 30 days, except for registry gifts, which you can return within 90 days from the event date.
Macy’s might have a special return policy for the holidays. If it’s the same as last year, you have 90 days to return anything you bought from Oct. 3 to Dec. 31, which means the deadline is Jan. 31, 2024.
