Buy Now, Pay Later: A New Option Coming to Google Pay

Affirm and Zip Join Forces With Google Pay to Launch Buy Now, Pay Later Options in 2024.

Starting next year, Google Pay will collaborate with Affirm and Zip, two fintech companies, to offer a BNPL option for online shoppers in the U.S.

Zip Pay-In-4, a service that allows shoppers to pay in four installments, will be available as a pilot test on Google Pay in January. Affirm Pay in 4, a similar monthly payment service, will be launched on Google Pay in the first quarter of 2024.

Drew Olson, senior director of Google Pay, stated that “Google Pay users shop on Google more than a billion times per day, and they want more flexibility and choice in how they pay. By working with Affirm and other pay-over-time providers, we can give them more payment options at checkout, and help merchants grow their business.”

Google Pay is among the latest companies to introduce BNPL features. Apple also launched Apple Pay Later in October, a BNPL service that enables users to split some purchases into four payments over six weeks.

How to use BNPL on Google Pay

A promotional banner will inform shoppers that they can use BNPL options with Google Pay at checkout. Shoppers can tap on the banner or choose BNPL as their payment method to see a list of BNPL providers such as Zip and Affirm, with their product details.

Shoppers can then pick a provider and check the payment terms and conditions. After that, they can follow a few steps to get approved and finalize their purchase.
