Wildfires in the Spanish region of Castile and Leon grew to a combined 3,300 hectares (12 square miles) on July 14, as temperatures soared to over 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit). In the province of Salamanca, the Monsagro fire has burned 2,500 hectares, and the Candelario fire has burned 800 hectares, El Diario reported, citing a local official. The Castile and Leon government said a camp had been evacuated, including 49 minors and 11 camp monitors, due to the fire in Candelario. Government spokesman Carlos Fernandez Carriedo, blamed “intense and changing winds” overnight that he said allowed the spread of the fire in the district.
