The Telegraph has been told that if Davis is “deemed to pose a threat to national security”, he will be subjected to the full range of “investigative tools” needed to protect the public from him. Sources have suggested claims he was one of the Beatles – the gang led by Mohammed Emwazi, also known as Jihadi John – are not accurate.
At his trial in Turkey in 2017, Davis denied being a member of the execution squad.
Turkish officials said the country would not become a “dumping ground” for western terrorists and that Davis would be deported. It is also thought that Davis retains his British citizenship making it difficult for the UK to refuse him entry.
Emwazi was killed in a drone strike and the two other members of the gang Alexanda Kotey and El Shafee Elsheikh, also from west London, were convicted of beheahing hostages, torture and kidnapping at a trial in the US earlier this year.
