A folding smartphone from Google has been rumored for a long time. Previous speculation suggested it could borrow the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 design. However, it looks like Google may be opting for the design first introduced on the Oppo Find N.

Android 12L animation

Animations in the recent Android 12L build, first spotted by 9To5Google, show a foldable device. The animation shows off a SIM tray at the bottom as well as a volume rocker on the right side.

While details about the smartphone are scarce at the moment, the animation being present on this software build suggests that a foldable device from Google is not far.

Spotted on Geekbench

Adding to the speculation, we saw Google’s upcoming foldable listed on Geekbench. Under the codename ‘Pipit’, it was shown to be running an octa-core processor with two performance cores clocked at 2.8GHz, two cores at 2.25GHz, and four efficiency cores at 1.8GHz. Scoring a single-core Geekbench 4 score of 4,811 points, and a multi-core score of 11,349 points performance is similar to the Pixel 6, which sports the company’s Tensor processor.

Late last year, we also saw the device in the Google Camera APK. A 12.2MP camera IMX363 was spotted running the show, which suggests an older camera setup compared to the Pixel 6 series which sports newer GN1 sensors.
