Angel’s Share Reopens in Greenwich Village

Angel’s Share, a downtown cocktail bar that closed last year and is considered a pioneer of the craft-cocktail renaissance in New York, will reopen across town.

Erina Yoshida, the daughter of Tony Yoshida, the restaurateur who opened Angel’s Share in a second-floor room on Stuyvesant Street in 1993, has found a new space for the bar in Greenwich Village. She will own and run the rebooted Angel’s Share.

The new address is 45 Grove Street, just steps from popular restaurants like Via Carota and Buvette, on a cozy block of Greenwich Village. The building, which has landmark status, has never housed a restaurant or bar. The space will seat 65.

The original Angel’s Share closed last March after a dispute with the landlord. Last summer it returned in pop-up form, as Ms. Yoshida searched for a new spot.

“I was really about to give up when I found this space,” Ms. Yoshida said, adding “it had this old world charm and a history, which was very important to me, knowing that we’ve been around for a long time, too.”

Ms. Yoshida is intent on recreating an atmosphere regulars of the bar would recognize. The large blue-and-gold mural depicting cherubs that hung above the original bar will return. Ms. Yoshida even brought over the old door to the bar and its antique chandelier. Angel’s Share will also retain its famous etiquette policies, which preclude standing at the bar, parties larger than four people or reservations. There will be a small waiting room to ease guests’ transition from the street to the atmospheric cocoon within.

“We just want to make sure to set the mood before they enter into the bar space,” Ms. Yoshida said.

The only thing indicating the presence of the bar inside will be a logo of an angel on the door.

There are a few updates. The original bar served food, but it was drawn from Village Yokocho, the neighboring izakaya that was also owned by Mr. Yoshida — part of a food-and-drink empire he built over 50 years in the East Village. The new Angel’s Share will have its own kitchen. Small bites under consideration by the team include sashimi, crudos, karaage chicken and homemade pickles.

The cocktail menu will include old favorites, new inventions and some cocktails created during the eight-month pop-up at Hotel Eventi on the Avenue of the Americas near 30th Street.

Another crucial difference: While her father was an invisible, almost mysterious presence at Angel’s Share, Ms. Yoshida plans to be on hand at the bar.
